Supporting Small Businesses
It’s the first part of November and people either love or hate hearing about Christmas this “early”. When it comes to putting up decorations, I’m definitely in the “nothing goes up until after Thanksgiving” group. I must confess that when we lived in the midwest, the weather dictated when the outdoor lights went up in deference to my husband who would be the one hanging precariously on the roof, and me, who would be the one taking him to the ER if he fell off said roof. However, when it comes to shopping, I’d rather get it done (the earlier the better) so I can enjoy the holidays without having to stress about whether what I want will still be available (I REALLY don't want to get into a cat-fight over the one remaining frankincense scented candle at the last local art fair in December) or whether it will arrive in time after I ship it. Given that the shipping carriers have already warned us of delays and we’ve all heard about the supply chain issues, I’m not taking any chances this year.
I have always been a big supporter of small businesses, especially during the holidays. Many of us as individuals were impacted by the pandemic (which hasn’t magically disappeared yet) and small businesses were hit especially hard. I’m sure you know of at least one local business that had to close due to the impact of the pandemic :-( You may have also heard of the Shop 1 in 5 Pledge: committing to make 1 in 5 of your year-round purchases from small businesses (ie, NOT big box stores). This not only helps the business, but it also helps the economy of the local community.
While many of us purchase from our local small shops, not everyone knows how to find small businesses online. Last year, many small businesses ended up trying to survive with only an online presence. So, how do you find small online businesses to support? I’m so glad you asked! There is a Small Business Shopping Directory that has over 400 small businesses currently listed. How convenient is that?! And to make it even better (and this is better, trust me), during the month of November, over 200 of the shops in the Shop 1 in 5 Small Business Directory are offering discounts to the supporters of the Shop 1 in 5 Pledge (Seaside Serenity Creations is proud to be a part of this holiday deal). Just think, in one location you can not only get excellent deals on your gift shopping, but you’ll be helping small businesses and local communities. It’s a win-win! And you may even find your new favorite go-to store for all your unique handcrafted gift-giving needs throughout the year :-)
